Oil lies at the heart of Iraqi politics. Yet in the eight years since UK and US bombs began to fall on Baghdad it has been a taboo subject. Greg Muttitt takes us behind the scenes of the occupation of Iraq to answer one of the war’s most pressing questions: what happened to Iraq’s oil?

fuel on fire book cover by Greg Muttitt[5]fuel on fire book cover by greg muttitt[6]Greg Muttitt, will be in conversation with Madeleine Bunting, associate editor of the Guardian, followed by a discussion with the audience.

Drawing on hundreds of unreleased government documents and extensive interviews with senior American, British and Iraqi officials and oilmen, Fuel on the Fire reveals how the occupying powers sought to sell Iraq’s oil industry to multinational companies. But it also tells the inspiring story of how Iraqi civil society groups campaigned to thwart their plans – with surprising success.

As NATO forces escalate their military intervention in Libya, analysis over the impact of US/UK interventions could not be more urgent. Join us on 23rd May for an inspiring evening of debate and discussion on the war in Iraq, its consequences and what lessons can be learned.
