Dear President Hoyer and the Directors of the European Investment Bank (EIB), Over the coming months the EIB will decide whether to spend €2 billion of public money subsidising the Euro-Caspian Mega Pipeline, the largest loan in your 57-year history. The money will be given to the Trans Adriatic Pipeline to build the part of the pipeline running from Greece to Italy. This pipeline is not needed. Gas demand in Europe is dramatically falling and is expected to continue to fall over the coming years. Yet your bank is proposing to use public money to fund a pipeline which will destroy the livelihoods of people living along the route, wreck beautiful landscapes - like that in Puglia and entrench the repressive Aliyev regime in Azerbaijan. In addition it will lock Europe into fossil fuels for at least another fifty years. Tying us into gas consumption when we need to be making an urgent transition to clean, affordable energy. As a European citizen i urge not to lend to any part of the Euro-Caspian Mega Pipeline.
