Green jobs in the North East

18 Dec 2023 admin

A just transition must support regions to manage the impacts of change in a way that centres workers, employers and communities.

The new North East Mayoral Combined Authority (NEMCA, formerly North of Tyne Combined Authority) can play a central role in providing a coherent regional policy framework for a just transition. This latest report from Energy Democracy Project outlines the opportunities and challenges presented by the transition to net zero in relation to green skills and green jobs, and indicates where and how the Combined Authority can support this transition.

Extended Case Study: Just Transitions for Farming

The future of farming, land management and food production are facing a critical period of transition across the country following the UK’s exit from the European Union and the associated Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).

Agriculture was responsible for 13% of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions in 2021. Emissions from agriculture in the North East is proportionately higher than elsewhere in the UK. Decarbonising the sector is crucial in transitioning to a climate-resilient, low-carbon regional economy. This requires supporting farmers, farm workers and land managers to adopt sustainable practices.

In this extended case study, Energy Democracy Project draws on participatory research to identify the challenges faced by agricultural workers and explore how regional government can support a just transition for farming.
