Remember Saro Wiwa : The Living MemorialOn 10 November 1995, Ken Saro Wiwa and 8 Ogoni colleagues were executed by the Nigerian state for campaigning against the devastation of the Niger Delta by the oil industry. The Living Memorial to Ken Saro Wiwa is a landmark public art project for London. Landmark in that it addresses the under representation of people of colour in the London cityscape. Landmark in that it puts the issue of environmental justice directly in the public gaze to activate the debate about London s ethical relationship to the wider world. This film by video artists Andrew Conio and Judy Price explores the five shortlisted artists proposals and the wider context for the project around the issues of loss, memory, memorial and representation and how artistic practice might engage with circumstances that globalisation make part of the fabric of our everyday lives. It features the work of artists and activists Sokari Douglas Camp, Siraj Izhar, Emmanuel Jegede, Emily Johns and Frances Newman/Jeff Jackson/Knott Architects, and a 30 minutes interview with Ken Saro Wiwa s son, Ken Wiwa. The accompanying music, specially composed by Ross Lambert and Eddie Prevost, takes the form of an intimate series of improvised musical dialogues, expressing their own personal relationshops to Ken Saro Wiwa and his work.
