Towards community and public energy ownership in Scotland
Our privately-owned energy system is intensifying inequality and climate breakdown. Oil and gas companies are raking in record-breaking profits, while the rest of us struggle to heat our homes. At the same time, emissions from burning these fossil fuels are causing extreme weather events in countries least responsible for the problem.
We’re working towards an energy system that puts communities front and centre by pushing for community and shared ownership of our energy system. We’re doing this by:
- Supporting Highland People’s Power, a community group exploring how to scale up shared ownership and community benefit in the Highlands
- Supporting a community organiser in Inverness to campaign on community issues and connect these with public energy solutions – in partnership with tenants’ union Living Rent
- Publishing research highlighting the economic benefits of community and publicly-owned energy for communities and councils across Scotland

We want to work with communities and local councils in Scotland to build an energy system that serves everyone – where clean, affordable energy is developed in a way that serves the public, not shareholder profits.
